    Montreal Casino & Hotel

The 1967 world's fair gave Montreal a cluster of pavilions on Île Notre-Dame, out in the St Lawrence. The former French pavilion, with its angled, terraced floors, became the heart of this property.

Inside. Restaurants spread over several levels and a cabaret-style room puts on shows. Slots and tables fill the floor space in between.

Outside. Parkland and river on every side, with the downtown skyline across the water, best seen from the upper floors.

Arriving. Drive over the bridges, or take the Metro to Jean-Drapeau and a short bus ride.

    Fallsview Casino Resort

Fallsview's tower is planted on the high ground of the Ontario bank, overlooking the Horseshoe Falls. Book a room facing the water and the falls fill the window.

Under one roof. A spa, a string of restaurants, a shopping galleria and a large theatre for touring acts and comedians. The casino is a big part of the building, yet a weekend here can pass without crossing it.

Timing. Summer weekends are packed. Midweek in winter is calmer, and the falls half-frozen are a sight in themselves.

    River Rock Casino Resort

Water, runways and rails all converge on this corner of Richmond: on the bank of the Fraser, minutes from Vancouver International, opposite Bridgeport station on the Canada Line.

Rooms. Standard rooms and suites, with an indoor pool for guests.

Evenings. A theatre stages concerts and comedy. The gaming area occupies the centre of the complex, edged by bars and restaurants, and a small marina floats on the river outside.

Stopovers. Trains reach downtown Vancouver in roughly half an hour.

    Casino Rama Resort

Built on Rama First Nation land, the resort looks over Lake Couchiching, close to Orillia and roughly ninety minutes by car from Toronto.

Staying. The hotel tower has its own spa, and dining ranges from quick counters to sit-down rooms.

Shows. An entertainment centre with around five thousand seats books headline concerts.

Seasons. Summer brings the lakes and cottage country into play. Winter is quieter, and the drive needs more care.
